This element of the course challenges participants by focusing on building their knowledge of trades literacy and carpentry skills. Participants will work together to apply their understanding of written measurements (in text format) and further their knowledge by completing project questions, apply it in a real world hands on testing environment.
Participants will work in pairs to design and create targets based solely on cultural game animals (to scale) to be produced out of OSB and lumbar that will stand on their own and serve as a measurement device to calculate participants ability to create targets within detailed parameters. The carpentry projects are designed to generate, within participants, a more active trades vocabulary, problem solving skills, sharing of perspectives, teamwork, time management, leadership and creativity. While serving as the literary link, the project tasks will guide them to accessing the tools/materials that they will need to answer the written challenges resulting in varying tangible outcomes (targets) that will demonstrate their understanding of the written portion of the project. It will also serve as a physical representation of the participants ability to follow directions and work within guidelines.
NOTE: During this stage of the course the facilitator will over see and review the paired participants various target builds. This day allows the participants to exercise and put to work what they have learned and develop some skills on the tools. The participants may produce differing results and the facilitator, along with the interpreter, can work with each pair to find out how they came to create the final product to make sure that they were able to follow the written directions. The targets must fall within a threshold and will be measured and discussed.
